The Suite

On The Hill

We live at the top of a steep hill in Hardwick, Vermont where you’ll have sweeping mountain views. We’re a 5 minute drive from main street Hardwick, 20 minutes from nordic skiing at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center, 45 minutes from Stowe or Montpelier, and 90 minutes from Burlington. Come for the small-town local experience and we’ll share all the best secrets of the Northeast Kingdom!

The Suite is a small (600sf) apartment above the garage attached to our house, ideal for a single person, couple, small family or two friends looking to have a low-key time. We can comfortably accommodate up to two dogs (no cats) in the Suite, who must be kept on-leash outside as we have free-ranging ducks. The Suite is only accessible via a flight of stairs.

The Suite has a private bedroom with a queen bed and a couch with a pull-out bed. The pull-out is a small full size bed and can comfortable sleep a small adult or child. The living area has a couch with chaise and a chair for seating. There’s a TV offering streaming services (no cable), one bathroom with tub/shower and a kitchen that is fully stocked with the essentials: drip coffeemaker, electric kettle, microwave, oven, small pot & frying pan, mixing bowls, plates, cups & utensils. We will set you up with coffee, tea, honey, sugar and a few breakfast basics like cereal and oatmeal. If you need a crib or high chair, we got that too.

The Suite shares a wall with our home office. Both Andy & Kole alternate working from home/outside the home throughout the week so we are around. Since we’re a small garlic farm, we may be working around the property, curing garlic in the garage below The Suite, and once in a while using large equipment, like a tractor, which can be noisy. Please read our On the Farm section below for details on staying with us during farming season. We have two dogs, Reba & Rooster, who will bark as you come & go and who aren’t easy-going around strangers. We aren’t always available to socialize too much during your stay, but we will say hi as often as we can! If you catch us outside in farming season, we’ll give you a quick tour of the garlic patch.

We have a 3-4 person hot tub that you may use during your stay. We also have an outdoor cold shower to rinse off in the Summer months and a cold plunge in the Winter, but shoulder seasons may offer the hot tub only. We’ve sectioned off a portion of our stone patio for your enjoyment with string lights, chairs and a chimera for a small fire. Just let us know when you’d like to use the hot tub/chimera and we will give you privacy. Note that hot tub/chimera hours end at 10pm. This is not a party place - we prefer to have a peaceful, quiet farm time. If you do to, please visit!

A note on weather:

Winter lasts from November to April in Northern Vermont and, due to our elevation, we get more weather than the rest of the state. Then it all melts in March & April and we get mud season. Please be prepared with a winter-capable vehicle with 4 wheel drive and/or snow tires if you are visiting during these months. We live up a long steep road that is, thankfully, paved & usually plowed early. But visitors who come with low-undercarriage cars or without 4 wheel drive often get stuck on the incline of our driveway and need to be pushed out. Winter is the most fun season in Vermont so bring your skis, wool layers, & your capable vehicle and come enjoy the season!

Northern Vermont is such a special place. There’s hardly any cell service, the winding roads are mostly dirt, the pace is slow and nothing’s on Google. Learn about our area before you come by checking out our Suite Guidebook below…

On the Farm

What will be happening on the farm at the time of your visit?

Staying on our small 1/4 acre home garlic farm is more farm-y certain months than others, so time your stay accordingly! Garlic is planted in October and lies dormant through the Winter, usually under at least 3-4’ of snow only accessible by snowshoe. It starts popping up out of the ground during mud season in April though the ground is usually so wet & muddy we try to avoid walking on it until the melt is over.

It will grow steadily taller through Spring and by the end of June, it’s 3 feet tall and throwing up scapes! This is a great time to visit the farm if you want to see lush, green, tall garlic plants as they grow in the ground. Plus the weather is fantastic.

Towards the end of July it’s garlic harvest on the farm - a busy time! You might hear the tractor going, there may be folks here to help, and we will definitely be in and out of the garage area below The Suite. That’s where we dry the garlic so there will be a strong garlic smell, fans going, & garlic cleaning happening right below the apartment from the end of July through August. The garlic smell usually dissipates after the first week of August, but for folks who might be sensitive to that, it’s best to know ahead of time.

By September the garlic is cured and ready for packing and shipping! It’s the busiest time of year on the farm and it all happens in the garage below The Suite. You can expect a lot of activity going on if you stay with us then.

Mid-October is garlic planting time. This is a busy few weeks on the farm and we often have folks around helping out. You might hear the tractor or other machinery and see two (or more) very tired & dirty farmers limping around the property at the end of each day.

By November, things have quieted down on the farm and we are absolutely spent. Vermont’s sunny season is so short we go so hard and then totally crash. Snow can happen as soon as Halloween, so by this time the days are short, the snow coming & we are ready to tuck in.

December is usually Winter in fits and starts and then January & February are peak snow seasons!

Vermont is gorgeous in all seasons! Actually not in mud season. Don’t come in March/April it’s gross here. But the long Summer lake days are precious, the Fall foliage is stunning and the snow on the mountains is truly a magical sight to see. Whatever season you visit our little home garlic farm, we hope you enjoy the Northeast Kingdom experience and come back to see us again!
